How do you know if your roof is leaking?

If there is water coming down and landing on your face in the middle of a comfy nap. All jokes aside, you might see trail coming down from the corners or cracks of your attic ceiling or even a sneaky water trail down your wall. A good indication is a water stain on your ceiling where the water has pooled. Finding a roof leak can be tricky but through investigation and experimentation you may be able to pinpoint the area or areas where water is coming through.

Most roof leaks can be found in your attic with a handy flashlight in hand and a loyal friend on the roof with a hose on the other side. Additionally, the first thing to look for are roofing penetrations as they are the most likely cause. It can be quite the adventure. OR, if you’d rather avoid all that Sherlockian investigating, installing an Infrared Roof Leak Scan may be an option to pursue in the future as this fancy technology will skip all the manual work and give you instant gratification and insight on the location and damages bestowed on your roof.

Is a leaking roof an emergency?

If there is inclement weather it can be an issue. Roof leaks in heavy rain could cause detrimental large scale damages to your roof, ceilings, walls and in some cases your personal possessions.

When you want to go about how to fix a leaking roof, here are some helpful informational tips.

What to do if your ceiling is leaking:

  • Check the roofing exterior around the same area of the corresponding water stain on your ceiling. Flat roof leak repair can be essentially easy to spot yet even for these types of roofs water can travel some distance before it finds a seam or sheathing to seep inside.
  • If the issue is a loose shingle, you could run down to your nearest hardware store and get a sheet of galvanized metal flashing, lift the damaged shingle and push in the flashing underneath.
If you’d prefer expansive covering, you could purchase a 6 mil polyethylene plastic sheeting and unfurl it on the damaged roof area from eaves to peak. It is recommended to wrap the ends of the sheeting around a 2 by 4, sandwich that with another 2 by 4, and nail the two together with 3 or 3 ¼ inch common nails.
  • Get a bucket, throw protective sheets over your furniture and floors and call it a day until a Residential Roof Repair professional comes over.

How to patch a roof leak:

If your roof has issues that are relatively minor, you can patch them up with relatively easy quick solutions.

  • Some cracks, holes, gaps, curled or misaligned shingles can be glued down with a caulking gun containing roof sealant. (If any holes are larger than ¼ in. than it may require professional assistance and additional methods.)
  • If there is shingle that needs to be replaced or is missing, lift the four corners with a pry bar and use a hammer to remove any possible nails. Slide it out and scrape any remaining cement underneath. Slide the new shingle in place and nail the corners down with 1 1/4 inch galvanized roofing nails. Finally, use a trowel to apply roofing cement over the four nail heads and the edges of the new shingle.

How can you tell if a roof needs to be replaced?

  • Shingle tabs are cupped or shingle edges are curled
  • Shingles are cracked
  • There are bald spots and granules missing
  • Widespread rot or mold are present
  • Dark spots on roof
  • Water damage

What To Put On Your Commercial Roof

Flat Roof On Top Of Building

Commercial Buildings Need High-Quality Roofs To Keep Them Safe.

Your commercial roof is more than just a roof, it is in charge of protecting your hard work and the employees inside. This is why, when you are deciding on the right roof for your commercial building, that you take the time to look at your options and choose the best one for you. What you decide to have as your roof will be on there for seemingly the next 50 or so years so it is important to love what you have and feel good about the investment that you are making. When it comes to commercial roofing, you have a lot of options that you can choose from, from single ply to metal, roofing to the roof coatings that will help protect them. All of these choices are very different, but they all do a similar job. The difference is going to come in the look of the material the price, and small variables of what each one does better than the other. Commercial roofs also tend to be very large so choosing one that fits your budget is also very important. That being said, roofing is not something you should cut corners on so you will want to do your research beforehand or never be afraid to ask your roofing contractor as many questions as you have.

Single Ply Roofing

Single ply roofing is an excellent way to protect your roof. Flat roofs have been using these for years because they are just that good. What this product is, is a membrane roof that is made up of sheets that are flexible enough to spread across an entire roof. There are two different groups that they could fall into: synthetic rubber or thermoplastic.

Thermosets – These are used on larger roofs because they are created to reduce the seams across the roof. Seams make your roof more vulnerable to water damage so if your roof doesn’t have any, then your roof is a lot safer from water that could sit on your roof. Some of these types of roofs are EPDM which are UV ray resistant and will also help keep your building more energy efficient.

Thermoplastics – This roof has seams that can be hot-welded together to create a waterproofed finish. PVC and TPO roofing are thermoplastics and are extremely popular options for roofing. They have additional strength and can cover your roof and protect it for a lot less money than many other roofing choices.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofs have taken over the roofing game. They can be found on residential and commercial roofs now and for a very good reason. Putting a metal roof on your commercial building can seem expensive, but when you break down how long this roof will last and the protection that comes along with it, the investment is worth it over and over again. You also have a lot of choices with this as well. When it comes to metal roofing it really is all about what you want it to look like. Metal is also very resistant to water which makes it a great roof to have in most areas. It can withstand hail, and heavy wind as well. These roofs have a Class A fire rating as well which means that they are the most fire resistant type of roof. Metal doesn’t have to be dark and shiny, it comes in a large variety of colors that is sure to match any home or building that you have. A few metal roofing options you have are:

Aluminum – This is a lighter weight roof that is durable, but won’t weigh down your roof any more than it has to.

Metal Shingles – Metal shingles are a great way to keep the traditional shingle look that you want, while still having the protection and longevity of metal. These shingles come in a huge variety of colors and can even be made to look like stone.

Standing Seam – These roofs create a look of strength because they are extremely strong. The standing seam name comes from the seams that rise up off of the roof and keep the roof at optimal durability against most weather.

Metal Roofs Can Typically Last Over 50 Years!

Roof Coating

Roof coatings are an excellent way to keep your roof lasting longer and keep it safer all in one. Coatings can be added to the top of your roof to do things like provide waterproofing, keep away mold, or even help protect from the sun’s UV rays. Roof coatings can add an additional 10 years on top of the already long life of your roof. This is just another way that you can keep your metal roof protected for as long as possible.
